Everhence

An endless pixel world. Dig it, build it, survive it.

Every game grows from a seed into a world without edges, forty planes deep and above the clouds. You play a dwarf with an axe. Gather, craft and build, and wake again wherever you last lit a fire.

“The great Way has no gate; a thousand roads lead in.”

Plane 0 · what you do

A small dwarf in a very big world

Explore, gather, craft and build, in the spirit of Minecraft, with the mood of Don't Starve and the look of a 16-bit adventure.

  • Wander without end

The world has no edge. A seed makes it, the same one in every browser, so you can share it with a friend.

  • Dig forty planes deep

Dig down with a ladder, plane by plane, through stone, hardstone and deeprock to the world's floor.

  • Gather, craft, build

Everything can be harvested. Craft in a 3×3 grid, find recipes as you find their materials, and smelt ore in a stone oven.

  • Mind the cold

Hunger, cold, heat and wet clothes. A fire warms a room, a coat warms you, and a swim in winter chills you to the bone.

  • See only what you see

True line of sight. Rock hides what's behind it, and a wood swallows the view two trees deep. At night your torch's circle is all you have.

  • Wake by the fire

Death leaves everything you carried where you fell. Then pick where to wake: a campfire you made your own, a bed, or a village well.

  • Know your mushrooms

Real herbs, berries and mushrooms, with poisonous look-alikes beside the good ones. Some remedies cure, and cooking makes some safe.

  • Hunt, and be hunted

Deer and sheep flee, boars charge back, wolves hunt at night, and spiders and snakes bite with poison. Nothing hostile spawns by a fire.

  • Swim, sail, bridge

Wade the shallows, swim the rivers, build a boat for the open sea, and lay bridges across the water.

Plane 0 · the surface

A climate, not a patchwork

Walk north and it gets colder: taiga, then tundra. Walk south into savanna and desert. Biomes span hundreds of tiles and follow the temperature and the rain. Mountains cast a dry lee, oases grow by desert water, and the seasons turn the woods orange and bare.

  • Climate by latitude. Colder north, warmer south, colder the higher you climb
  • 15 biomes, from marsh to oasis, with pockets of one inside another
  • Four seasons of 30 days that change the look, the weather and the warmth
  • Weather comes in fronts that drift with a turning wind. You can watch a storm come

Plane 0 · a village

Villages few and far between

Villages are rare, at least 600 tiles apart. Each has a well at its heart and a few red-roofed houses on dirt paths. Find one and you can make its well a place to wake. Build your own the same way: set four walls and a door around a room, and the roof appears. Inside, the rain stays out and a fire keeps it warm.

  • Wells to find, and to wake at after death
  • Houses from four walls, fences and gates around your garden
  • Rooms that hold a fire's warmth, until you leave the door open

Plane 0 · after dark

The dark is a real place

What you know of the world is what your dwarf has seen. Line of sight is traced from where you stand. Rock and cliffs hide what's behind them, and trees thin the view. At night the view shrinks to your light, so a campfire or a torch set on a wall widens it. Nothing hostile spawns within reach of a fire.

  • Fog of war with memory: what you've seen stays on your map, dimmed
  • Fires light the world and keep the night's creatures away
  • Wolves hunt after dark, so carry light

Plane +8 · above the clouds

Climb above the weather

Mountains rise in terraces, twelve planes high. Climb the ramps and you pass through the clouds. From plane 5 the cloud sea closes beneath you, and higher still come the stars. The air cools about a degree and a half with every plane.

  • Clouds from plane 5, stars from plane 10
  • Caves inside mountains open onto the cliffs
  • Snow lies on high ground, so bring a coat

Plane +9 · a crater's rim

Volcanoes, all the way down

In hot or rugged lands a rare volcano rises in terraces to a crater of lava. A lava river spills down its south flank, falling from step to step. Beneath it a shaft of lava runs through every plane to the world's floor. Dig into its side at any depth and the lava flows in. Where water meets it, it cools to stone, and a still pool turns to obsidian.

  • A lava river that falls down the cliff steps
  • Water and lava make stone, or obsidian
  • Water and lava flow into what you dig, and fall down your holes

Plane -3 · an old mine

Old mines, left as they were

A headframe on open ground marks an abandoned mine. Its ladders go down to three planes of corridors, with rails, timber supports, wall torches still burning, and cobwebs. Chests of what the miners left lie in the dark. Take it apart for iron, planks and silk.

  • A headframe over a shaft of ladders down to plane −4

Plane -24 · the deep

The deeper, the richer

Ore runs in veins: coal from plane −1, iron from −3, gold from −10, diamond from −16. The rock hardens as you go, from stone to hardstone to deeprock, so you need better picks to follow. Below −10 lava pools glow in the caves, and the rock around them holds more gold and diamonds. Caves have biomes of their own, ice under the tundra and moss under wet woods, and each keeps the year's mean temperature, a little warmer every plane down.

  • Four ores in veins, each deeper and rarer
  • Harder rock deeper down, and tool tiers to match
  • Ice, moss, dry and deep caves with their own climate

What sets it apart

Everhence takes its mechanics from Minecraft and its mood from Don't Starve and Secret of Mana. Then it goes further on the world itself: climate, weather, water, sight and the deep.

Under the hood

Small on purpose

A world without end, in about 270 KB.

  • Smaller than a photo

Code, art, music and all: the whole game is 1.6 MB of files, and your browser fetches about 270 KB of it, compressed. Most photos on a phone are bigger.

  • Music written as notes

Six tunes in the manner of 16-bit consoles, written as note text and played by your browser's own synthesizer. There isn't a single sound file.

  • Sprites written as text

Over 2,000 frames, drawn as rows of characters, one character per colour of a single palette.

  • No server, no account

The game is a few static files. Your saves stay in your browser, and you can export any of them as a JSON file and import it anywhere.

  • One seed, one world

Generation keeps to exactly rounded maths, so a seed gives the same world in every browser.

  • Plays on a phone

Hold to walk, hold still to work, tap to turn, double-tap to use. It fits a narrow screen.

  • Light on the GPU

Day tones, torches and dithered light falloff run in a shader. When the frame rate drops, the game draws less rather than stutter.

Asked around the fire

Questions

Is it really free?

Yes. No price, no ads, no shop, no account. Open the page and play.

What do I need?

A current browser: Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari, on a computer with a keyboard or on a phone or tablet by touch. Nothing to install.

Where are my saves?

In your browser, saved every few seconds. From the menu you can export any game as a file and import it on another device. Clearing your browser's site data clears them too, so export the ones you love.

Can I share a world?

Start a game from a seed and give your friend the same seed. Same seed, same world, down to the last mushroom.

Multiplayer?

Not yet. It's a single-player game for now.

What does the name mean?

Hence is old English for “from here”, “from now on” and “therefore”, and “to go hence” is to die. Everhence holds both: forever going hence, dying and waking again, and forever going on from here.

Is it finished?

No. It's early, and it changes almost every day. Expect rough edges, and new things each time you come back.

~*~ A note from the maker ~*~

Hi, I'm Roman.

Everhence is the game I wanted to get lost in: a world that doesn't end, weather that comes from somewhere, caves that keep going down.

It runs in your browser, it's free, and your saves stay with you. It is early and changes almost every day. If you find a bug, or a seed worth sharing, I'd like to hear about it.
